Star Trek Picard Talk Through

Hosted ByBrian Meloche & Ruthie Rink & Laurence Todd

The Star Trek Picard Talk Through is an in-depth, long-form, community-driven episode discussion of Star Trek: Picard, the new series shown on Paramount+ in the US, Australia, Latin America and parts of Europe, CTV Sci-Fi Channel & Crave TV in Canada and Amazon Prime everywhere else. We’re Brian Meloche, Ruthie Rink, and Laurence Todd; we're three long-time Star Trek fans, especially of Star Trek: The Next Generation. We cover the story, characters, and the show’s placement both within the Trek universe and the continuation of the life of legendary Federation Captain Jean-Luc Picard. Together with our listeners, we rate each episode, discuss the highs, lows, and share other thoughts. Thanks for listening!

Star Trek: Picard – Season 1 Episode 2 – Maps and Legends

We’re back with extensive coverage of the second episode of Star Trek: Picard, Season 1 Episode 2, titled Maps and Legends. This episode was written by Akiva Goldsman & Michael Chabon, and it was directed, for the second time in a row, by Hanelle M. Culpepper.

First, we have some feedback from the last Short Trek and the series premiere…

We have feedback for the last Star Trek: Short Treks, Children of Mars, as well as the premiere episode. Discussion on Maps and Legends begins at 15:57. One thing of note, we have used chapters for the first time this week. If your podcast app supports them, it will allow you to skip ahead to the section you want easier.

Rogue Synths Attack Mars!

We see in the cold open the attack of Mars by synthetics. This was spectacular and chilling.

Star Trek: CSI!

I personally enjoyed Laris and Jean-Luc’s investigation of the murder at Dahj’s apartment.

The F-Bombs!

Like Discovery’s S1E5 Choose Your Pain, this episode featured two F-bombs. The first is by Laris, who actually said “feckers”, but the captions put a U instead of an E. The other one is more blatantly used by Admiral Kirsten Clancy around the time of this screen capture. This second one was pretty startling, both to the viewers and to Picard himself.

I wasn’t too happy that they made that choice. I want to make it clear: IT DOES NOT OFFEND ME. There was an outcry from some viewers when Discovery’s Tilly and Stamets cursed. Some were offended; others thought it wasn’t becoming of a Starfleet officer; many others thought at the time that it made it difficult for them to share Discovery with their children. like how they were exposed to Star Trek as children by their parents. It’s that last reason that makes me disappointed that they made this choice. They don’t need to give ammunition to the haters!
