Star Trek: Lower Decks – Season 2 Episode 2 – Kayshon, His Eyes Open

We’re back! Brian and Kyle are here to talk through the Season 2 premiere of Star Trek: Lower Decks, titled Kayshon, His Eyes Open. This episode was written by co-executive producer Chris Kula and directed by Kim Arndt, who directed three episodes last season.

SPOILERS AHEAD!!!

If you haven’t seen this episode of Lower Decks, stop right now!!! Go watch it, then come back!!! We’ll be here for you!

Boimler’s a little out of his element

I didn’t mention it on the podcast, but one of the funniest Boimler moments was when Boimler was taking notes at the briefing and Riker said “you don’t have to write that down” and Boimler wrote that down. I absolutely LOVED how they used the transporter clone like what happened to Riker in the TNG episode Second Chances.

Kayshon, the puppet Kayshon…

We meet the new security chief, Kayshon, who is Starfleet’s first Tamarian. This was a little different than I expected, but still good.

Collectors are great for the Spot the References Section!

Like the last episode, there were a lot of Trek references this week. We found a lot of them ourselves, but this Den of Geek article to help us find more. From the giant Spock 2, to those headsets from the TNG episode “The Game”, to the Vulcan weapons from Amok Time, to the giant Abraham Lincoln, to a baseball bat and ball, to crates of Chateau Picard wine, there were a lot of them. Boimler also references the Enterprise in his little speech to the away team. Effectively, it was the intellectual episodes vs. the action episodes. Essentially, Trek is both.

A Very Special Voicemail…

I know some people don’t listen all the way through the episode, so I wanted to highlight a particularly amazing voicemail we received this week. We couldn’t stop laughing. So, if you don’t want to listen to the whole episode, skip to that voicemail. Trust me, you will thank me!
