Rebinging Star Trek DS9: Season 1 Wrap Up
Welcome to episode 20 of Rebinge DS9 where we wrap up the entire first season! In this episode of the podcast we talk about what we loved and didn’t love about season 1. We also go through our mail bag and read some of the emails and tweets that we’ve been getting from you!
Season 1 Wrap Up
To wrap up season 1, we each list our top 5 and bottom 5 episodes. There is a fair amount of overlap, but at least one of Kim’s bottom 5 appears in James’s top 5…how did this happen? Can you guess what that episode is? We also talk about our favorite guest stars of the season and we call out the worst wig (hint: it’s visible in the image attached to that episode of the podcast). Enjoy!
What’s this rebinge thing?
It’s a re-watch of a thing you’ve already seen but love to watch and talk about. We go deep with every episode, walking you through every scene and analyzing all of the characters and story lines.
Listen to our intro episode if you want to know a little more about us. And kick off the whole thing with our rebinge of the pilot episode Emissary. Or catch up on the previous episode: S2E1 The Homecoming.
Next time…
We are taking a week off before diving into Season 2 Episode 1: The Homecoming! Get ready for season 2!

The Millennium Falcon.
I actually enjoyed the series from season one, yes season one is really slow but as someone who loves the characters driving the plot instead of plot driving characters I loved it; I think the series holds up well to viewing decades later! I personally disliked the later seasons when a certain person comes in (avoiding spoilers for Kim) and kind of takes over but their stuff excluded it was still good on the whole. Comparing the series to itself I feel the best stuff is mainly pre-season four but it will be interesting to hear the takes as you go. 🙂
I will agree with the email that was sent by Teresa saying for the time especially Kira and Dax are strong female characters who are treated for the most part the same as the men; again I have some issues with a coming plot for Dax but Kira from day one until the end is a female character I would love to see more of today because she’s unapologetic about her feelings, she can hang in there fight wise with the best of them, she’s flawed but not naive, and she just feels real – you could take Kira and put her in any series and she’d be one of if not the most interesting character on that series. Is the handling perfect? No, but I agree it’s still better than some stuff sadly even now and for the time period the show was in.
One of the episodes I’m looking forward to hearing is “Rejoined” because I want to know how you think it was handled on the whole, did it feel like a “very special episode of the week” or did it feel organic to the character, could they have referenced it more in later episodes/seasons, how much is Jadzia and how much is the past life (I definitely have a theory on that) and why do you think it was they act like Dax can rejoin one element of the past but they can be friends with Sisco multiple times? Again I’m trying to avoid spoilers for Kim but Dax technically has multiple lives where they’re friends with Sisco so the reasoning they give is a bit flimsy at the end.
You’ve already talked about “Duet” and I’d argue that’s the best episode of the series, at least one of them, so I’m good there. 🙂
Out of curiosity, do you plan on covering the characters individually at a point or just discussing the episodes and how they change over the series?
Ambiguity can be such a good thing for a series!
Boo to saying “Move Along Home” is in the bottom Kim, but I totally get picking “Storyteller” as that was really a “Seriously?” episode. Ha. I do wonder if Kim’s worst episode for the series is going to come later because there’s some rough ones to come involving Quark I’ll just say that! 🙂 Quark himself I find to be a fun rogue character but there’s two episodes with him that aren’t good and one is not good because it’s kind of problematic, James you may be able to guess the title. Again I get what they were going for but it doesn’t pay off as well as it could have.
Woah James “Dax” is a good episode!
Ugh Kia Wynne, I wanted to punch her in the face so many times! She was a character who could have gone either way – good guy or bad and again the character handling on this series still is really good I say because they’re allowed to be complex and not just A or B on the morality scale…it makes DS9 so good! 🙂
“If you cut out the entire story then yeah sure” – lol.
“Dax” is a great episode for setting up the Tril debate of just how much is the host and how much is the symbiote; there’s so much potential with a character like that and wish they would have done more exploring it. Yes there’s a few episodes that do touch on the bond and divide but it’s never as much as it could have been and how it could have been used to a higher potential.
Lol “and then Brian Keith said”.
I’d argue Kira is the best character on the series and Nana certainly kills it acting wise! I could watch a whole Kira series! I wish they had done more with Dax; she has burst of intrigue and then gets sideline it feels for multiple episodes. Yes she’s there but she doesn’t do as much as you think she should for her skills and position.
